When it came to moving on to the next stage of his life, John Valente decided buying a new home with Help to Buy was just right for him.
The 38-year-old had been renting privately with friends for years, whilst slowly saving for a deposit. Earlier this year, he finally decided it was the right time to buy, and after house-hunting in and around Liverpool discovered Keepmoat’s Regency Park development.
He said: "I had looked at other houses and developments when I came across Regency Park and seen they were offering Help to Buy. I wasn’t too sure what it was all about, but after researching it a bit I realised it was perfect for me.”
Through the Help to Buy scheme, you only need to raise a 5% deposit and can access the support of up to 20% in the form of an equity loan from the Government. There's nothing to pay on the loan for five years and, best of all, the loan is interest free for that time.
“Getting my deposit through Help to Buy has enabled me to use more of my savings for furniture, and it’s given me so much more flexibility. I would have had to save for another year without it.” John said.
After only starting his house search earlier this year, John says he’s impressed with how quick the process was:
“I started looking after Christmas, and from start to finish the whole process took just 6 months. My house was in the middle of being built, and with no chain to worry about, once it was complete I could move straight in. There were no complications or delays which meant everything ran really smoothly.”
John moved into his new home in July, and is enjoying the freedom of owning his own home.
He explains, “For me, it means I finally have my own independence. I own my own home and after sharing with friends for years, it’s great to finally have my own space! The fact that my house is a new-build and comes with appliances and warranties is a bonus too, it’s reassuring to me.”
When asked if he would recommend the scheme to others he says, “I already have! I’ve told all my friends who are renting about it, and explained how it works. I think it’s a brilliant scheme, without Help to Buy I wouldn’t have been able to afford my own home.”
